Rep. Toby Overdorf - Sixth Week of Session

Happy Friday, Everyone!

Week 6 of session has been very jam-packed and rewarding. Beneath the craze of this week, there were real shifts worth paying attention to. With budget discussions ramping up, my colleagues and I take a closer look at how Florida’s standard practices & our newly proposed policies utilize taxpayer dollars wisely.

  • Movement: It's made its way to the third stop, the Ways and Means Committee.

It’s hard to believe that we are already halfway done with the session, but I couldn’t be prouder of our progress. Here are some pictures I have to share with you all:
Representative Trabulsy and I presenting HB803 - Building Permits and Inspections in the Commerce Committee bright and early on Wednesday morning. Very proud of our progress with this bill, and it is about time we receive quality infrastructure!
Great to have Ted Astolfi in Tallahassee talking all things Economic Development, Martin County, City of Stuart, compliance with current state laws, and job/trades training. More to come soon.
On Thursday, we passed the most conservative, far-reaching bill on Property Tax. This House Joint Resolution will remove homestead Property Tax. I urge you all to tune in to the livestreams of session on the ‘Florida Channel’ in the next upcoming days.
We had such an exciting visitor come visit us at the Capitol. The Florida Aquarium was so gracious to bring Pebbles over for a meet and greet!
I had a great time with the students of FSU College of Social Science and Public Policy Student Leadership Council. This is a great bunch of future leaders. Thank you for stopping by, and stay in touch.
Florida Service Fire Day was incredible. Thank you to our first responders for showing up to educate and showcase the work you all do to keep us safe and how we can take preventative measures ourselves.
Clay County Day never disappoints. They put on a great reception with a southern rock performance. Thank you for bringing your wonderful team up for another year of this tradition. We all enjoy celebrating Clay Day.
Florida Department of Transportation Day out in the courtyard. Insightful information on the future of our connectivity and advancements being made in the way we travel.
As Chair of the Property Tax Committee, I want to flag that there’s a lot developing in the property tax space, and media coverage is increasing. Please take a look at this latest WPTV article.

(State Rep. Toby Overdorf, R-Stuart, who helped shepherd the plan, said the measure represents a decisive shift in tax policy.)

"The way we passed it today— it's a faucet. It immediately goes off," Overdorf said.

He added that House leaders believe they've done the groundwork to justify such a dramatic step.

"Well, we've been studying this for a year. We've been looking at this for a year. We have our data points in the House— as I said in there— the House is ready, and we have the ability to put forward meaningful reform, and that's what we're proposing to do," Overdorf said.
