In response to the billions of dollars spent annually on frivolous litigation that plagues Florida’s bottom-five legal climate and negatively impacts Florida families, local businesses, and their customers with high costs on everyday goods and services ranging from groceries to insurance, in 2022 and 2023, Governor Ron DeSantis, alongside former Senate President Kathleen Passidomo and former House Speaker  Paul Renner, passed Florida’s most significant lawsuit abuse reforms in history. That legislation put the needs of Florida businesses and consumers above billboard personal injury trial lawyers' profits and has had an immediate impact for Floridians. Just two years after passage, those Florida Chamber-backed reforms (20 years in the making) are working, helping Florida’s insurance market realize significant improvements, including:
  • Florida saw the lowest average homeowners’ premium increases in the entire nation in 2024 at just 1%, compared to other states, which saw increases of over 20%.
  • 11 new homeowners’ insurance companies have entered the market over the past two years.
  • Among the state’s top 10 insurance carriers, 60% have expanded their business, and 40% have filed for rate decreases.
  • With major companies filing for rate reductions between 6% and 10.5%, auto insurance costs are also dropping.
You can read more about how the reforms are working in my op-ed, which was recently published in the Miami Herald HERE.

Now, feeling threatened more than ever, those same billboard trial lawyers are back at it again, working overtime to reverse the progress made towards stabilizing Florida’s insurance market, which is already benefitting Florida’s families, local businesses, and economy. In an important Florida Chamber tele-town hall this evening at 6:00pm, I will be setting the stage and moderating a discussion featuring Governor DeSantis for a mid-session update, including what's currently happening in session and how the business community can get involved to protect our progress, keep Florida Florida, and make us more competitive.

As I said in my op-ed, Florida is on the right path, and we should stay the course to let the 2022 and 2023 reforms continue to work.

I hope you’ll join us tonight to see free enterprise in action.

My best,
Mark
